Dallas Cowboys DeMarcus Ware to Receive the 2013 Humble Beginnings Award

Austin Street Center is proud to announce that Dallas Cowboys defensive great DeMarcus Ware will be the recipient of the 2013 Humble Beginnings Award.

Comerica Bank is the Presenting Sponsor for this year’s event.

This award will presented to Ware at the annual Humble Beginnings Award Luncheon, to be held on Monday, June 10 at Union Station in downtown Dallas.

Through seven NFL seasons, DeMarcus Ware has emerged as one of the most dominating defensive players in the league, and has been named a starter to the NFC Pro Bowl squad in each of the previous six seasons.

He owns the top four single-season sack figures by a club linebacker, has started 111-of-112 games in his career, and has logged a club-record 23 multiple sack games. Ware posted double-digit sack numbers for each of the past six seasons, and led the league in 2010 with 15.5 sacks.

Off the football field, Ware is involved in numerous youth-driven charities and organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He is also the first NFL player to win the Butkus Award, which is given to the athletes who are committed to playing steroid free. Ware knows the importance of helping kids make good choices in life, as he and fellow NFL player Reggie Bush delivered encouraging messages to high school football participants at the Red Bull 7-on-7 Game Breakers Finals in Dallas in July 2011.

“Now in it’s 13^th year, the Humble Beginnings Award annually recognizes distinct members of the local sports community that have come from ‘humble beginnings’, and have attained a point in their lives that they care giving back to the community, honoring where they came from,” stated Keith Price, Executive Director of Austin Street Center. “It is fitting that we honor a player—and a person—of the caliber of DeMarcus Ware with this award.”

Table sponsorships will be available for this prestigious event. Net proceeds will benefit the 400+ clients that are served each day at Austin Street Center, one of the premier homeless and emergency care facilities in the Southwest.

Our Mission

Austin Street Center provides emergency shelter and related services to the homeless person in a compassionate, faith-based community and provides “whole person” therapeutic programs so that the person in need might be better able to make responsible choices, positive changes and have economic self-sufficiency. We provide the basics of food, shelter, showers, clothing and, when necessary, medical attention, to those who come to us each day. Austin Street Center has become nationally recognized for its unique therapeutic program for the homeless. Not only does the Center offer safe, clean shelter and an evening meal for up to 475 men, women and children each night, but it provides substance abuse treatment, medical and psychiatric care, adult rehabilitation, a transitional living facility for clients who qualify, and a beautiful interdenominational Chapel.
