Maintenance Assistant

For more than 35 years, Austin Street Center has specialized in caring for the most vulnerable homeless men and women in Dallas. Beyond meeting basic needs, Austin Street is committed to individualized care for each person who comes to us for help. Our goal is that every homeless person who comes to Austin Street Center finds hope, support, and the resources they need to transition out of homelessness.

 

Your role will support the mission through the following actions:

  • Ability to multitask, handle on-site crisis and adapt to the changing needs of the clients.
  • Acceptance of agency philosophies of providing hope, support and the resources needed to transition out of homelessness.
  • Able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, staff and community contacts and able to effectively address and resolve conflict as needed
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse teams, build consensus, and motivate change

 

Position Purpose:

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for basic maintenance and repair of the facilities, including interior, exterior and vital systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).

 

  • Performing routine maintenance around the building such as fixing structural damage, for example, window, door, or wall repair.
  • Repairing broken or leaking plumbing and restoring full use of water fixtures
  • Drywall/plaster repair and painting
  • Maintain tools and equipment to ensure they are safe and operable.
  • Working on damaged electrical wiring when a shortage or severed wire occurs
  • Maintaining the HVAC equipment to keep climate control in the facility functioning properly
  • Applying preventative measures to the building to reduce the risk of future problems, such as using a sealant on a flat roof
  • Fixing potential safety hazards to avoid injuries
  • Painting, tape and bed, mudding.
  • General maintenance and repairs as needed, including but not limited to: roof pathing and repairs, tile and grout work, painting, drywall, basic electrical, mechanical, and plumbing repairs

 

Skills / Requirements:

 

  • 5-10 years of experience preferred.
  • Have and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Have and maintain a clean driving record
  • Ability to lift 60 – 80 pounds. Tasks may involve bending, lifting and carrying heavy items.
  • Acceptance of agency philosophies and guidelines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to be flexible and work under time constraints
  • Demonstrate experience with sensitivity to varying cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds, values, and attitudes
  • Capable of working independently and using problem solving skills
  • Possess a high level of integrity & be a strong team player
