Are you or someone you know experiencing unsheltered homelessness?

If you’re living on the streets without a roof over your head or in an unsafe environment, Austin Street Center’s emergency shelter has a caring and experienced team that can help. Austin Street can provide basic needs assistance to individuals with no safe or accessible place to go and can guide our clients to finding a permanent place to call home.

Intake

We evaluate individuals seeking shelter on a walk-up basis Monday – Friday from 11am – 4pm.

  • Walk-up individuals may enter our Welcome Center as early as 8am and are encouraged to arrive as soon as possible as our beds are typically filled before 12pm.
  • Walk-ups are evaluated for intake on a lottery basis as we frequently have more people seeking shelter than we are able to accommodate.

Referrals

We accept referral requests from hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and street outreach providers.
  • Referrals must be received by 6pm to be evaluated for a bed on the following day.
  • Referrals must be sent with the attached form completely and accurately completed.
  • Referral acceptance is subject to availability and each referring entity must receive a personalized response of acceptance before sending individuals to our shelter.
  • If the form is not complete or the process is not followed, referrals will be returned to the referring entity for assistance.

MEDICAL RESPITE Referrals

For patients discharging to homelessness from hospitals or treatment facilities with acute conditions who can benefit from continued home health level of care in a congregate sheltering facility, we accept direct referrals to our medical respite program for people who meet the following criteria:

  • Single adult age 18+ (both men and women are accepted)
  • Independent with activities of daily living

  • Willing to be an active participant in their care

To send a referral, fully complete the referral form and e-mail it to medicalrespite@texashealth.org.  Referrals are reviewed by the Texas Health Resources respite team in the order they are received Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm.  Responses will be sent via e-mail within 72 hours after chart review and coordination with the Austin Street intake team.
