Position Purpose

Austin Street Center is a housing-focused shelter dedicated to helping individuals not just survive, but thrive. Our mission is to support each client in moving out of the shelter and into a permanent home as quickly as possible. As the first face of case management, the Shelter Orientation Case Manager plays a critical role in this process. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to operate within a structured framework.

 

We’re looking for a compassionate, smart problem-solver with exceptional customer service skills who can engage and motivate individuals facing various physical, mental, and behavioral challenges. Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct “on-call” case management for walk-up services to clients not assigned to case management
  • Gather vital information to ensure clients are matched with the right case manager
  • Manage the case management waitlist and assign clients to caseloads
  • Lead daily shelter orientation classes to acclimate new clients to shelter rules and procedures
  • Resource Procurement: assist clients in obtaining critical documents, income, and housing resources necessary to relocate them to a safe, decent, and affordable housing solution appropriate to their needs
  • Meet with unengaged clients to connect them to services
  • Data Entry and Quality Management: document all services in the local Homeless Management Information System, including case notes and client enrollment and exit information with minimal missing data; conduct CAS enrollments

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in human services required
  • Previous experience in crisis intervention, case management, advocacy, and coordination of services in the area of homeless services highly desired
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work, sociology, or psychology preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written communication
  • Demonstrates experience with and sensitivity to varying cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds, values, and attitudes
  • Intermediate to advanced familiarity with digital communication, including cloud-based software, e-mail, and Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis
  • Able to work outside in adverse weather conditions when needed
  • Able to work in a noisy environment with a large group of people
