Position Purpose

Austin Street Center provides basic needs assistance to all people staying with us in our emergency shelter, including providing donated clothing and hygiene items upon entry and regularly thereafter.  In addition, we provide laundry facilities to all of our shelter residents regularly.  This position makes sure that each person has the items they need from our donations and make sure they are able to do laundry regularly so they can shelter with dignity and move faster into a home.

We are looking for a determined, detail-oriented and task-oriented workhorse who can handle fulfilling concrete tasks with sometimes ambiguous requests.  Are you kind, smart, and dedicated person who wants to make a difference with some of our most vulnerable neighbors?  This position may be for you!

Primary Responsibilities

  • Process clothing orders: receive and collect orders, enter into inventory system, and distribute orders to clients in a timely manner
  • Complete laundry services: assist clients and volunteers to open and operate the laundry rooms in the shelter on a regular basis
  • Document services completed fully and in a timely manner

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to lift 25-40 pounds. Tasks may involve bending, lifting, and carrying heavy items.
  • Customer service skills, especially when working with people with communication challenges and impairments
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, especially orally
  • Ability to adapt to change

Additional Experience a Plus:

  • Previous work or volunteer experience in homeless services
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • U.S. Military service
