Mission of Austin Street Center: Founded in 1983, Austin Street Center provides emergency shelter and meets the basic need of the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Dallas.

Core Values: Kindness, Trustworthiness, Empowerment, Determination

Position Purpose

Austin Street Center’s Shared Housing program is designed to help clients secure safe, stable housing by pairing them with compatible roommates and preparing them for the realities of shared living. Through education, guided matchmaking, and ongoing support, the program creates rapid, cost-effective housing solutions that promote stability, community, and long-term success. The program also assists clients with move-in coordination and tenancy support to ensure every placement starts strong and remains stable.

The Case Manager II will assess clients for shared housing readiness and provide shared housing matching services, which may include guiding clients through Housing 101 coursework, facilitating roommate matching using approved screening tools, conducting field-based housing search activities, and supporting clients through move-in and early stabilization. This role plays a critical part in helping people transition out of homelessness quickly while building the communication, problem-solving, and tenancy skills needed to thrive in shared living environments.

We are looking for a sharp, steady, solution-focused professional who can navigate complex roommate dynamics, teach with confidence, and intervene early when challenges arise. Someone who is kind, observant, and unflappable — a person who can support clients with clarity, empathy, and strong judgment. If you’re committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors, this role is for you.

Shared Housing Coordination Responsibilities may include:

Shared Housing Education & Housing 101 Orientation

  • Deliver Shared Housing 101 classes to prepare clients for shared living, including communication skills, boundaries, shared responsibilities, and conflict-resolution strategies.
    • Facilitate roommate-readiness activities such as roommate profiles, compatibility assessments, interviewing practice, and expectation-setting exercises.
    • Ensure clients complete all Housing 101 requirements prior to entering the matching process.
    • Provide education in both classroom and field-based settings as needed.

Roommate Matching Using Shared Housing Tools

  • Assist clients in creating accurate roommate profiles that reflect routines, preferences, expectations, and personal boundaries.
    • Use agency-approved tools to identify compatible roommate pairings and assess shared housing readiness.
    • Facilitate introductions, guided discussions, and expectation-setting conversations prior to move-in.
    • Document the rationale for each match and outline the plan for stabilization support.
    • Conduct field-based outreach or housing-search activities when appropriate to support the matching process.

Shared Housing Move-In, Support & Conflict Mitigation

  • Coordinate move-ins for shared housing placements, including documentation, transportation, and review of shared housing agreements.
    • Conduct regular home visits and check-ins — both scheduled and field-based — to monitor safety, stability, and roommate dynamics.
    • Provide early conflict resolution, mediation, and coaching to prevent tenancy disruption.
    • Collaborate with landlords, property managers, and community partners to address concerns and maintain stable housing placements.
    • Respond to emerging issues in the field when needed to support client stability.

Strong applications will include a cover letter which details how the applicant demonstrates the character qualities required for excellent performance in this position.

Please ensure to include in the application your most recent three professional positions and at least three references.

Austin Street Center is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
