Position Purpose

Safety is one of our most basic needs.  In a shelter with over 400 residents, it is even more important that all people, both our clients we serve and staff who serve them, are actually safe and feel safe as they go about their daily business.   The Safety Officer is responsible for respectfully and calmly addressing unsafe situations in and around the Austin Street Center shelter campus, in cooperation with the Security Team.

We are looking for a kind but clear communicator who handle conflict very well.  Are you kind, smart, and dedicated person who wants to make a difference with some of our most vulnerable neighbors?  This position may be for you!

Primary Responsibilities

  • Completing security rounds in and around the shelter campus and engaging security issues
  • Searching incoming people for weapons and contraband
  • Enforcing shelter rules with clarity and compassion
  • Monitoring persons coming in and out of the shelter
  • Greeting and directing people coming into the shelter

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to lift 25-40 pounds. Tasks may involve bending, lifting, and carrying heavy items.
  • Customer service skills, especially when working with people with communication challenges and impairments
  • Ability to communicate effectively, especially orally
  • Ability to adapt to change

Additional Experience a Plus:

  • Previous work or volunteer experience in homeless services
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • U.S. Military service
