Austin Street Center changes from night shelter to 24-hour shelter

March 18, 2020

In response to COVID-19, Austin Street has executed a new shelter model, transforming from a night shelter into a 24-hour shelter. This gives our clients the option to shelter-in-place and not be pushed back onto the streets every morning to fend for themselves. However, many clients must still leave the shelter every day for work, medical appointments, or other personal business.

In addition, we have made the following adjustments for added safety:

  • Suspended normal daily intake process
  • Added a quarantine area for incoming clients
  • Followed CDC guidance on spacing, which decreased capacity
  • Constructed dividers between beds to help maintain social distancing
  • Implemented a five-tier Infectious Disease Prevention and Response Protocol which include education, mask requirements, and increased sanitation
  • Suspended all group programs, while serving clients individually
  • Provided secure outdoor space for clients
  • Suspended all on-site volunteer activities
