Maggie's Story

After a lifetime of hard work, Maggie found herself facing some of the most difficult years of her life. Following a foot injury in 2020, a prescription for pain medication led to an addiction to opioids and alcohol. After losing her job and her apartment, Maggie spent six months homeless in her car before entering rehab at Nexus, where she was referred to Sisterhood at Austin Street Center in June 2026. “Sisterhood has saved my life,” Maggie shared. Through counseling and the support of her care team, she began working through past trauma, rebuilding her confidence and finding hope for the future.

Today, Maggie is preparing to move into her own apartment in North Dallas, with a year of housing support through Catholic Charities. Although starting this next chapter feels a little scary, she is looking forward to a fresh start and hopes to welcome a couple of cats as emotional support companions. Maggie credits her Sisterhood counselors, Shayn and Michelle, for helping her see a future beyond addiction and homelessness. With plans to stay connected to Sisterhood, Alcoholics Anonymous and her sponsor, Maggie is determined to keep moving forward. As she looks ahead to a fresh start in her new apartment, she shares a simple but powerful message: “I feel like my future is very bright.”
