Henry came to our shelter in April 2023. He had worked in the funeral business since college but after a divorce, was faced with debt and unable to make ends meet. Through word-of-mouth, Henry heard that Austin Street could help him get back on his feet. This was his first experience in a shelter, and he initially felt stressed, but was also optimistic about his journey towards rebuilding.
An Austin Street case manager helped Henry receive retirement benefits and apply for food stamps and based on his situation, he was enrolled in the Rapid Rehousing program and transitioned to an apartment in Dallas. The case manager stayed in touch to ease the transition and ensured he could reach financial independence. Henry is now almost done with this year-long program, has enough money saved to pay next year’s rent, and will be living on his own soon!
Henry feels that it’s important to give back and often volunteers with The Human Impact, a group that works to befriend the homeless and build a long-term community. He also regularly volunteers at Austin Street!
